The month of May in NYC is quite awesome when you are into everything Africa-inspired like me :-). Movies, art, fashion, performances … you name it! I need another vacation to have enough time to attend all these cool upcoming events and activities. But as I just came back from my holiday in Accra, that’s not going to happen.
My most favorite event is the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair happening this weekend, and this weekend only. It’s totally worth going. I attended it last year and it was a very inspiring and fun experience.
Another fave of course the BAM Dance Africa Bazaar. I mean yes, I have just returned from Ghana and I did shop a lot of accessories there, but I mostly attend the Bazaar for the atmosphere and to take pictures of uber-stylish people and enjoy the Brooklyn experience.
Last but not least the African Film Festival. It runs almost for 4 weeks, so “no time” is no excuse. They show movies by emerging and more established film makers from the African Continent & the Diaspora in venues across Harlem, Midtown and Brooklyn. I have never regretted attending, I always walk away with new insights and stories.
